1 Tsp. Ground Ginger
1/2 Tsp. Ground Cloves
Powdered Sugar
As a homesteader, I try to do as much home made as possible. I found this recipe for these “Cough Sweets” and decided to give them a try. I altered the recipe some, to work with our household needs. If you want to give them a go, here is how I made them.
I first start with 2 cups of white sugar, 1 cups of water, and 2 tablespoons on fresh lemon juice. Place in a sauce pan and turn on stove to medium heat.
Now, add 2 tablespoons honey, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves.
Bring the mixture to a boil and cook until the temperature reads 320 degrees on a candy thermometer. This will take about 20 minutes. Keep the heat to a medium to medium high. Watch carefully!
Once the temperature has hit 320 degrees, you can either pour the syrup onto a parchment lined baking sheet or you can do little spoons into drops. You could also use a hard candy mold. I don’t own a candy mold so I just pour the mixture onto 2 different baking sheets. Now you will want to set aside and let the mixture cool completely.
Now that the mixture has hardened, break the “brittle” and sprinkle with powdered sugar. If you chose to do a different shape, still sprinkle with the powdered sugar and cover the pieces completely. This will keep the cough drops or “Cough Sweets” from sticking to themselves.
Once they are fully dusted, place in an air tight container and use to sooth a cough or sour throat.
Because of the intense cloves and ginger ingredients, these really work great to keep your throat soothed during cold and flu season.
