What is a Monte Cristo you ask? Well to put it simply, it is a Ham or Turkey (or both) and Swiss melt with French Toast for bread. It has that wonderful balance of sweet and salty and is really perfect for any time of the day. You can throw them together pretty fast and it is one of those dishes that is perfect for a snack or serve it with fruit and eggs to make it more of a well rounded meal.
The first step is to get the egg mixture ready for the French Toast. I use 3 eggs, 3 tablespoons of milk and a dash or two of cinnamon and beat all the ingredients together. Then you melt about a tablespoon of butter in your skillet on the stove and place your dredged Texas toast in the skillet.
You just want to cook the French Toast like you would do normally. Cook the toast until it is “toasted” and the egg mixture is cooked all the way.
Now I like to take my meat, in this case I am using ham, and place it in a skillet to heat the meat all the way through.
I then take my Swiss Cheese and place a slice on top of the meat. I do this while still in the skillet so the cheese can melt into the meat.
I then assemble the sandwich. A slice of French Toast, Ham and Swiss, and then the next piece of French Toast. I then cut the sandwich in half and dust with some Powdered Sugar. The Monte Cristo is warm, melty and gooey and so amazing on the taste buds! It makes a great breakfast or the perfect Mid-Night Snack.
