Many of you are aware of our dreams to buy some land and move out of the city… That we have long had dreams of building our own “farm” business. We want to be able to offer real food options to our family, friends, and community, because we know how hard it can be to find real food out in the marketplace. We have a dream of being able to offer options! We want to raise livestock and farm the permaculture way. We already have a nursery for some plants, but we would like to expand it to include more variety, from fruit and nut trees/bushes to heirloom plants and veggies. We also want to be able to raise our own pasture fed meats. Beef, Lamb, Pork, and Chicken. We dream about collecting and cleaning fiber from the Alpacas and Sheep we plan to have. And eventually we want to retire on the fruits and nuts produced in the food forest we plant in our early years.
For many years we have been haphazardly working toward these goals… In fact, at the beginning of 2016 we got tired of just researching/talking about it and started an agricultural business (a nursery) to get our feet wet in the industry, and set a hard goal of purchasing property in the next 3-5 years. That time frame has moved up and is now going to happen in 2017. That’s right, we’re buying a farm!!!
A huge bonus is that we already know pretty much all there is to know about the property we’re getting. We are buying the family “farm” from Mariah’s parents. It has been in the family for over 25 years and we have been involved in much of the goings-on there. In fact, when Tomithy took his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course, he based his design exam on this property. So we know its best and worst qualities, and have a good idea of what we should do with the property.
We will be finalizing paperwork and beginning to take over management responsibilities for the property in the coming months… signup to our mailing list to get updates of our journey every week. We’ll be posting more articles on our progress on this blog. Also, we are looking into the possibility of putting videos of our progress onto YouTube. Let us know what you think about this in the comments below.
Wow!! Such exciting news for you all!
I think that vlogging would be a much easier way for you to document this longterm process. Much less time consuming than writing it all out.
However writing out a timeline, which sounds like you are well on your way to having a good one in the works, with pencil n paper is good too, uploading it can serve as a good resource to access it anywhere then too. Im sure you all know that.
So excited for you all! And wish you nothing but good luck in this great opportunity. Love you!
Thanks! We have a project plan with a timeline… But this has changed our focus so much that we probably need to start over, as much of it had to do with FINDING and researching properties…
I’m actually finding out that video editing takes about one hour per minute of produced video… But I think it’ll be worth it, even just to be able to look back on how far we’ve come.
