Lovage

Do you love the flavor of celery but don’t like the texture? I have stumbled upon a fantastic replacement and I will never go  back to celery again!

Lovage is a Mediterranean Perennial plant. It grows up to 8 feet tall. The leaves are great as an herb in soups or salads. The seeds can be used as a spice. The roots make great vegetables to roast with your parsnips and carrots.  The stems make a great straw substitute in place of the celery in your Blood Marys.

In this house, we harvest the leaves and use them in our soups and salads. The stems are dried to be used in chicken broth. The best way to use the plant is fresh but we have so much growing that I will never be able to use it all before the winter, so we dry most of it. I will not make chicken soup without this wonderful herb. It is more potent than celery but the flavor really brings a warm balance to any dish.
